First Aid At Work

First aid at work (FAW) - 18 hours tuition, 3 days

This regulated course is designed to provide the learners with an in depth knowledge of first aid. It provides the learners with both theoretical and practical skills to enable them to respond to first aid emergencies.

Course contents include:

The role of the first aider
Head injuries
Managing an emergency
Low blood sugar
Communication and casualty care
Poisoning
Asthma
Resuscitation (adult CPR)
Bleeding (minor and severe)
Seizures (adult)
Bone, muscle and joint injuries
Severe allergic reaction
Burns and scalds
Shock
Chest pains (including heart attack)
Spinal injuries
Choking (adult)
Stroke
Eye injuries
Unconscious casualty
Fainting
Workplace legislation and accident reporting.

Assessment: Learners must complete multiple choice question papers, and must also demonstrate practical skills including CPR, Recovery position, and treatment of injured casualties. Successful completion of both theory and practical assessments will lead to a First Aid at Work certificate valid for 3 years.
